Delhi: 60-Year-Old Run Over Twice By SUV, Murder Case Filed
New Delhi: A 60-year-old man died after an SUV driver ran the vehicle over him twice in Peeragarhi village in Delhi on Sunday (May 24). According to a police official, an analysis of the CCTV footage revealed that the victim was targeted deliberately.
The deceased has been identified as Bijender Bharadwaj, a resident of the village who worked as a watchman at the tempo stand where the incident took place.
A police official told PTI that a PCR call regarding the incident was received at 4:03 am on Sunday and local team was rushed to the location. Upon their arrival, Bijender was found lying unconscious on the road and succumbed to his injuries shortly after being taken to a nearby hospital.
In CCTV footage secured, the vehicle the can be seen idling around the corner with its headlines on for a few minutes while the victim was sitting in a chair at the tempo stand. After some time, a man was seen stepping out of the vehicle and coming towards the watchman with a large stick and attacking him without any provocation.
As the victim attempted to save himself, the man returned to the vehicle and ran over him once, pushing him into a corner. When the injured watchman tried to escape, the vehicle swiftly drove towards him, running him over a second time before fleeing the scene.
The police said that skid marks from the vehicle were also found at the spot during investigation, indicating that the car braked before or after the incident.
A case has been filed under sections 103 (1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intentions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Paschim Vihar West police station. Efforts are currently underway to ascertain the registration and ownership details of the vehicle.
Sunil Bhardwaj, a relative of the victim said that he had no enmity or dispute with anyone. “We came to know about the incident around 3.30 pm. My uncle has been working here as a security guard for the past one year. He was a simple man and had no enmity or dispute with anyone. Anyone here can tell you that he never fought with anybody,” he told PTI.
“The police reached the spot and checked the CCTV footage, but the vehicle’s number plate is not visible in the footage,” Bhardwaj added.
The police said they are scanning CCTV footage from nearby roads, traffic intersections and commercial buildings to locate the direction of the vehicle before and after the incident. Multiple teams have been deployed to trace the accused.
