Three Hmar men – Joshua Lalringsan, Lalbiekkung Hmar and Lallungawi Hmar – were arrested in Assam’s Cachar district on July 16 and declared killed in an alleged police encounter the following day. The Assam police claimed the trio were militants involved in subversive activities, but their families accuse the police of staging an extra-judicial killing, presenting video evidence and forensic findings pointing to brutal torture.
