New Delhi: Amid mass detentions of students, youth activists, journalists and others gathered to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demand his resignation in Delhi's Jantar Mantar, serious allegations have been made that some Delhi Police officials manhandled and assaulted women protesters at the site. The protest has entered its third day today.

Protesters were being stopped by CRPF personnel and police barricades as they began a Citizens's March from India Gate to Jantar Mantar, called by All India Students' Association (AISA) and others.

In Mumbai, on Sunday (October 4), the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are leading a joint 'Garjana rally'. The Thackeray cousin brothers – Uddhav and MNS chief Raj Thackeray – were present at the march from the Metro Cinema and toward the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters in south Mumbai. State leaders of Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) also participated in the march.

On the second day of the protest, AISA president Neha Bora, psephologist-activist Yogendra Yadav, transparency activist Anjali Bhardwaj and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan were among the dozens of protesters detained by the Delhi Police. The protest had barely kicked off, with just about 150 people turning up, when it mutated into a show of force and brute violence by the Delhi police, going by accounts of the day.

On Friday, thousands of people had turned up at Jantar Mantar as well as at Shivaji Park in Mumbai to demand that CEC Kumar resign. The Mumbai protest was led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The CJP has called for a nationwide protest on October 10.
