New Delhi: A 44-year-old man was lynched in the Araria district of Bihar based on the suspicion of cattle theft, the police said Thursday.

The incident took place in Dak Haripur village, falling under Robertsganj police station area, they said.

Mahesh Yadav was caught by a mob who alleged that he was trying to steal cattle along with two associates. He was beaten to death, Shiv Sharan Sah, SHO, Robertsganj said.

A case has been registered in connection with the lynching and investigations are on, he added. The FIR is against unidentified people.

According to Hindustan Times, the police intervened and took Yadav to the hospital, where he was declared dead. A police official also told the newspaper that Yadav had "several criminal cases registered against him".

On December 29 last year, another mob lynching had been reported from Araria – also apparently because of 'cattle theft' rumours. A video of that incident had gone viral, and showed about 300 people attacking Mohammad Kabul with sticks while he lay motionless.
