New Delhi: Several opposition political parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha have extended support to the call of Bharat Bandh on August 21 given by various Dalit and Adivasi organisations in protest in response to the Supreme Court’s recent verdict about sub-classification of reservation available to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
Left parties have also supported the strike, reported The Hindu.
The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) has taken a contrarian view to a recent Supreme Court judgment by a seven-judge Constitution bench.
The NACDAOR has said that it believes the judgment undermines the earlier ruling of a nine-judge bench in the landmark Indira Sawhney case, which established the framework for reservations in India.
The NACDAOR has demanded that the government enact a new law on reservation for SCs, STs, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and include it in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to protect the legislation, reported The Indian Express.
The latest Supreme Court judgement overturns the 2005 E.V. Chinnaiah v. State of Andhra Pradesh judgement in which the court had held that all Scheduled Caste groups under Article 341 were one homogenous group. Article 341 authorises the President to declare certain castes and classes as Scheduled Castes.
