New Delhi: Day before a scheduled 'Badlaav Zaroori Hai' rally of the Communist Party of India (CPI) at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, its workers and supporters from several districts of Uttar Pradesh, as well as its leaders, were allegedly placed under illegal house arrest by the local police to deny them access to the protest site, CPI leader and former MP D. Raja alleged on Monday (August 31).

In a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah on August 31, D. Raja said that people from remote areas of Uttar Pradesh, along with party leaders, were doing preparations to participate in an All-India rally scheduled in Delhi. Necessary permission for holding the rally was already granted by the government authorities, he said.

“It has come to the notice of our Party Headquarter that in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, the local police is harassing the people and leaders of our party placing them under illegal house arrest. We have definite reports from Aligarh, Hatharas, Ghaziabad, Sambhal Shahjahanpur and from other several districts,” he said.

“In some District police is threatening our Comrades not to participate in Delhi rally. This all is deplorable,” he added.

He condemned the alleged action, saying it was “an open violation of the fundamental rights” and that it amounts to the denial of the democratic rights in a democratic country.

He urged the home minister to intervene and instruct the UP Police and administration not to take any illegal and undemocratic actions against our CPI leaders and workers, seeking a response.

Addressing a press briefing last evening, Raja highlighted the alleged detentions again and said, "The Yogi Adityanath government is resorting to intimidation and repression to prevent CPI comrades from attending the historic Badlaav Zaroori Hai rally. Raids. House arrests. Police pressure. This is not democracy. This is attempt to create fear. Yogi Adityanath may try to intimidate us. He will not succeed. We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated."

The party went ahead with the rally on Tuesday, September 1, targeting the Narendra Modi-led government, which it has accused of failing to address economic distress, weakening democratic institutions, undermining federalism, and responding to public dissent with repression instead of engagement. The rally is part of the party nationwide campaign over the stated issues.
