New Delhi: A nine-year-old boy, Abhishek Rajbhar, was reportedly killed on Sunday (November 27) in Uttar Pradesh after being mowed down by an SUV belonging to the local Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Harish Dwivedi. The incident took place near Hardiya petrol pump in Basti district, the Times of India reported.
Police have filed charges against the unknown driver of the vehicle after CCTV footage of the incident went viral.
Abhishek was a Class 2 student at the Hardiya primary school. He was referred to the KGU trauma centre in Lucknow, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
His father, Shatrughan Rajbhar, told the Times of India that no action has been taken against Dwivedi or his driver, despite the MP and his vehicle being clearly visible in the CCTV footage. The MP has reportedly not even paid his condolences to the family. “He was my only son and we had high hopes for him,” Shatrughan told the newspaper.
Abhishek used to go to school on foot, his father continued. “After the school got dispersed on Saturday around 3 pm, Abhishek left for home and while crossing the main Hardiya road, a speeding SUV of the BJP MP crushed him,” Shatrughan said.
India TV quoted Basti superintendent of police Ashish Srivastava as saying the FIR has been filed under charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving or riding on a public way, and an inquiry is underway.
“We will not spare the driver at the wheel of the SUV, who caused the incident. Two vehicles of the BJP MP have been spotted on the CCTV. An officer of CO rank is probing the case. The post-mortem of the boy has been conducted,” Srivastava said.
An 87-second video clip captured the incident. It shows two SUVs, including one with a damaged bumper.
