Discrimination in housing is a fact of life for many urban Indians, particularly middle-class Muslims, who are increasingly finding it difficult to rent or buy accommodation outside particular localities that have evolved, for one reason or another, into "Muslim areas". But the fact that discrimination has become commonplace does not lessen the sense of hurt, shock and alienation that the person denied a house because of her or his religion feels.

Reem Shamsudeen, an assistant professor of English, recently went through the experience of being turned away at the last minute because her prospective landlord said she was a Muslim. So she took to the Internet to record her distress, addressed to the Chief Minister of Delhi:
