On the afternoon of April 2, Ankur Kumar (22) was outside the district court premises in Meerut, amidst the crowd protesting against the dilution of the SC/ST Act. The crowd of protestors stood outside the back-gate of the court premises – some chanted slogans, while a few pelted stones aimed inside the court premises. On the other side were lawyers and policemen. Several rounds of bullets were fired from inside, of which one hit Ankur in the stomach. He died a few hours later.
