In this interview, Mani Shankar Aiyar, politician, diplomat and author, compares Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that "dimagi naxals" are a "threat" to India and must be identified and isolated, both to George Orwell’s "thought crime" and "thought police" from his dystopian novel 1984 and Adolf Hitler's identification and genocide of Jews in 1930s and 1940s' Germany.
Aiyar says the claim that dimagi naxals need to be identified and isolated – made by the PM in his Independence Day speech – is ominous. He believes that vigilantes will be assigned this task, just as they have been used to identify alleged "love jihadis" and alleged "cow smugglers."
However, Aiyar is confident that the Gen Z will fight back, as will the older generation. He also points out that India is very different from the Germany of 1930s, which had no real experience of democracy and was a much smaller country. India is very different on both counts.
