Manipur: Bomb Blast at BJP MLA’s Residence in Imphal West
New Delhi: Unidentified persons triggered a bomb blast at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh's residential compound in Manipur’s Imphal West district early on Friday (August 28), police said. While no one was injured in the attack, the blast caused a small crater on the ground and caused damage to the compound's walls.
The Konthoujam MLA told reporters that the explosion occurred at around 1.30 am at the rear side of his residence in Konthoujam Mayai Leikai. Singh, who is also the Manipur government spokesperson, said the explosion was loud enough to "shake the house."
Singh had returned to Manipur after an out-of-state visit on Thursday (August 27) and had met with his workers that evening.
He said he had not received any previous threats prior to the incident and questioned the purpose of the attack, calling for those responsible to explain their actions.
"Under the prevailing situation in the State, I want those responsible to clarify such violent acts. What is the gain and the purpose of such an act? I strongly condemn it and don’t want such things to happen," he said, as quoted by The Hindu.
Manipur chief minister Y. Khemchand Singh, described the incident as a "senseless and barbaric attack” on the residence of an elected representative, amounting to an "attack on democracy," in a post on X. He said he had visited Singh's residence since the blast and that the perpetrators would be "brought to justice soon".

Till now, the police have not publicly identified those responsible for the blast and no group has been named in connection to the incident.
The attack comes amid the continuing volatile situation in Manipur, where violence and political tensions have remained pervasive since 2023. According to state governmental data shared in April this year, over 59,000 people have been displaced and at least 217 people have died due to ethnic violence in the state since May 3, 2023, and March 30, 2026. Ethnic violence has primarily affected districts like Churachandpur, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kangpokpi, the last of which has seen escalating turmoil over the last three months.
