Manipur: 200 Assam Rifles Jawans Sent to Border Town of Moreh After Cop's Killing, Ambush
New Delhi: Two hundred Assam Rifles soldiers were airlifted to Moreh town in Manipur, according to a report by Hindustan Times, close on the heels of the killing of a cop there. An armed ammunition robbery attempt by a large mob was meanwhile seen in Imphal West.
The paramilitary force is responsible for guarding the Indo-Myanmar border. Moreh is a trading town on the border.
Ethnic violence and its aftermath continues to make its presence felt in the state since it broke out in early May this year.
On October 31, a Manipur police officer was shot dead by suspected militants while he was overseeing the construction of a helipad in Moreh. Soon after, a reinforcement police party sent to Moreh was also ambushed by armed men in two places, grievously injuring three policemen.
Then on November 1, a mob of 700 armed miscreants stormed the First Battalion MR campus in Imphal West to snatch arms and ammunition from the DGP Pool Arm Kote and Unit Pool Arm Kote (Quarter Guard).
Manipur police, which registered a first information report on this at Imphal Police Station, noted that security forces fired tear gas and live rounds.
Three CRPF personnel were injured when "armed miscreants tried to snatch their service weapons," police noted.
The injured CRPF jawans are 39-year-old Arup Das, 27-year-old Nalijit Taluk Das and 29-year-old Lil Kantha Raj.
The armed miscreants took away multiple tear gas guns, rifles and magazines containing ammunitions.
Police noted that they also destroyed the offices of the IGP (Prisons) and Superintendent of Jail, along with the Junior Commissioned Officer's room and took away cars and walky-talky sets.
They also entered and ransacked the computer room of Manipur Police Control Room, the NAB office and the office of the additional director general of police (intelligence), Manipur.
