New Delhi: In yet another incident pointing out that the sectarian conflict in Manipur refuses to slow down, a bomb exploded at the Dhanamanjuri University complex in Imphal, killing one person and injuring another on February 24, 2024.

The explosion occurred at around 9:30 pm in the university near the office of All Manipur Students Union (AMSU).

“Two persons sustained injuries in the blast, and they were rushed to a private medical hospital for treatment. One of them later succumbed to his injuries, while the other is getting treated,” a police officer told the Hindustan Times.

The deceased was identified as 24-year-old Oinam Kenegy, while Salam Michael (24) was injured. Both of them were residents of Bishnupur district.

At the moment, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the blast. The police said that the area has been cordoned off, while efforts are underway to identify the explosive, believed to be a grenade, and the organisation behind the blast.

In another incident, the office of the United Committee Manipur (UCM) in Lamphel, Imphal was also arsoned on Saturday. UCM is a rainbow organisation of various civil society groups formed in 2001 to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur. The police said that no one has been injured in the incident, and a probe is on.

The Manipur conflict between the majority Meitei community and Kukis, tribals who populate a section of the hills, has affected normal life in the state since May, 2023. The violence has killed around 200 people and displaced over 50,000.
