Modi, Shah Praise CRPF For 'Eradicating' Naxalism Amid Reports of RAF Firing Pellets At Unarmed Civilians
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah took to social media on Monday (July 27) to congratulate the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on its Raising Day for their "unwavering courage and commitment to duty," especially targeting India's "internal security" battles such as the Naxalite movement.
The posts come amid steadily growing reports of violent CRPF crackdown, including pellet guns, tear gas, lathi charge and physical assault, on unarmed civilians in India during the nationwide student protests last week.
Lauding the security force for its bravery, Modi wrote on X, "Greetings to all CRPF personnel on their Raising Day. The CRPF has distinguished itself through its unwavering courage and commitment to duty. From safeguarding internal security to serving citizens during challenging situations, CRPF personnel have always placed the nation first."
Particularly mentioning the Naxal movement, he said, "Their efforts in eliminating the menace of Maoism are particularly notable and have contributed to peace and progress in the lives of several people."

Shah said on X, "Since its foundation, the @crpfindia has set countless milestones of pride by winning every battle to ensure India's internal security. On March 31, 2026, Shah had announced a "Naxal Mukht Bharat," claiming the country was free from "left-wing extremism." The Bharatiya Janta Party's campaign against the Naxalite movement, over the last 12 years, has hinged overwhelmingly on indiscriminate killings, mass displacement and blanket impunity awarded to security forces.
As reported by The Wire earlier, between 2024 and 2026 alone, "a total of 706 Naxalites were killed in encounters, 2,218 were arrested, while 4,839 surrendered" as per official records. The real figures may be much higher.
Following reports of serious pellet gun injuries, the CRPF had launched a probe on Friday (July 24) to determine whether pellet guns has been used by its anti-riot unit, the Rapid Action Force (RAF), during the protests. The investigation revealed that an RAF jawan fired at least seven rounds from a pellet gun, five of which hit unarmed protesters.
A separate diary entry at the Parliament Street police station showed that Delhi Police's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) ordered the RAF to deploy anti-riot guns against protesters. The revelations come after the Delhi Police resolutely denied claims of using pellet guns against protesters last week.
