On May 29 (Monday), people from the Kuki and other tribal communities of Manipur gathered at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state and chief minister N. Biren Singh, who is from the Meitei community.

Over hundreds of people from tribal groups gathered at Jantar Mantar with posters in their hands and raised slogans against the local BJP government in the state. However, at the same time, the protestors also urged the Union government led by the BJP to intervene in the matter and establish peace.

The main demand of the Kuki community is President’s Rule in Manipur as the state government has allegedly failed to maintain peace among the tribal and non-tribal communities.

“They (the state government) call us their brothers and sisters in front of the press and the very next day they call us ‘illegal immigrants’ and then terrorists. They don’t have a clear stand on this issue. They are imposing false allegations over us which is absolutely wrong,” said a women protestor from a tribal community.
