New Delhi: In Tamil Nadu’s Salem, Mamata Banerjee will enter into wedlock with Socialism on Sunday, with Communism, Leninism and Marxism watching on.

This quirky news, reported by The Hindu, does not refer to the West Bengal chief minister or communist parties or ideals, but to two people whose families are evidently committed supporters of the Communist Party of India and the Congress.

Socialism is the name A. Mohan’s third son. The former is the district secretary of the CPI. The bride, Mamata Banerjee, is from a family of Congress supporters.

According to The Hindu, Mohan named his sons after left ideologies: his first son is named Communism and the second Leninism. His grandson’s name is Marxism. The newspaper reported that Mohan grew up in a communist family and became a full-time worker of the CPI.

His wife’s first pregnancy coincided with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, leaving many to wonder if this would spell the end of communism. Mohan wanted to ensure that communism would literally live on through his son, deciding to name his first child Communism.

“Communism will not die until the human race exists. Hence, my first son was named so. My second son was named Leninism in memory of Lenin. Communism has to be established for socialism to take shape,” he told The Hindu.

Names like these are quite common at his place, Mohan said.

“These names may sound new to the outer world, but it is quite common here. Around 60 years ago, senior comrades here had such names. The names of communist countries and leaders — such as Moscow, Russia, Vietnam, Bupesh Gupta, Jeevanandham, Venmani and Czechoslovakia — were given to comrades here. My children were named similarly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee, who is a close relative of Mohan’s family, was named after the three-time West Bengal chief minister, when she was still a member of the Congress.

The wedding has been scheduled for June 13 and the wedding invitation has gone viral on social media.
