New Delhi: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi were convicted on Friday (December 17) and sentenced to 14 and seven years in prison, respectively.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict in a makeshift courtroom in a jail in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi, reported Dawn.

The court also imposed fine on Khan and Bushra Bibi amounting to Rs. 1 million and Rs. 5,00,000, respectively, the failure in paying which will result in an additional six months in jail for Khan and three months for Bushra Bibi.

The case pertains to Khan and Bushra Bibi allegedly obtaining billions of rupees and land from Bahria Town Ltd for legalising Rs. 50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the United Kingdom during the previous PTI government headed by Khan.

Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 in a series of legal cases. The 72-year-old former Prime Minister of the country has claimed that the cases against him are “politically motivated.”

“Both the convicts are present before the Court, they be taken into custody in this case and be handed over to the Superintendent Jail along with the Committal Warrant to serve the sentences so awarded,” said the verdict.
