New Delhi: The Bangladesh Supreme Court has stayed a high court judgment that declared “Joy Bangla” as the national country’s national slogan.>
The slogan was popularised by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted on August 5 this year after massive protests against her administration.>
After the change of government, the state had moved to suspend the high court’s ruling and had filed a leave to appeal petition with the Supreme Court, seeking the stay on the high court’s verdict passed on March 10, 2020, reported the Press Trust of India.>
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on Tuesday (December 10) passed the verdict on the ground that the judiciary cannot interfere in the issue as the national slogan is a matter of the government’s policy decision.>
“Joy Bangla’ will not be considered as the national slogan following this Appellate Division order,” said Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque, who appeared for the government during the hearing.>
