As the Wimbledon final began on July 16, Novak Djokovic was on the verge of equaling three significant records: Most consecutive Wimbledon titles (five), most Wimbledon titles in total (eight) and most Grand Slams including the pre-Open era (24).

Spain's 20-year-old world number one Carlos Alcaraz had lofty ambitions of his own, though, and ended up beating the Serbian 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a thrilling match at the All England Club.

That victory takes Alcaraz to a total of two Grand Slam titles and leaves Djokovic still tantalizingly close to surpassing Serena Williams as the Open Era player with the most major tournament wins.

The Serb had been in blistering form this year, going into the tournament with the Australian and French Opens already under his belt. His next chance to win that coveted 24th Grand Slam? The US open: A competition he last won in 2018 and whose reigning champion is none other than Carlos Alcaraz.
