A Supreme Court-appointed panel today struck a body blow to the Indian Premier League - and the crores of rupees that ride on its success - by suspending the two-time champion team Chennai Super Kings as well as Rajasthan Royals from the cricket tournament for two years because key team officials were involved in betting.
The verdict was handed down by the three-member committee headed by former Chief Justice R.M. Lodha.
The committee also suspended the two officials - Gurunath Meiyappan of CSK and Raj Kundra of RR - for life for betting during the 2013 season and thereby bringing the IPL and the game into disrepute. Kundra is co-owner of the team, while Meiyappan is son-in-law of N. Srinivasan, former head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and promoter of India Cements, which owns CSK.
The Lodha commission was set up by the Supreme Court in January this year. Its mandate included deciding the quantum of punishment against Meiyappan, Kundra and the two franchisees -- India Cements Ltd, owner of CSK and Jaipur IPL, owner of Rajasthan Royals.
