India Ranks Far Below US, China in AI Research with Only 1.4% Paper Contribution to Conferences

The study revealed that US and China presently top AI research with 30.4% and 22.8% shares, respectively. It added that India needs to grow AI research by at least 40% a year to get to a 5% global share in the next five years and create a world-class innovation ecosystem.

New Delhi: India ranks far below other countries such as the US and China when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, despite country’s huge pool of technology talent.

India stands 14th in AI research with a global share of just 1.4 per cent (2018-2023) when it comes to paper contribution in the top 10 AI conferences in the world, according to a study by AI accelerator and ecosystem builder Change Engine, reported The Economic Times.

The study revealed that US and China presently top AI research with 30.4% and 22.8% shares, respectively. It added that India needs to grow AI research by at least 40% a year to get to a 5% global share in the next five years and create a world-class innovation ecosystem.

In the decade of 2014-2023, India registered a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.5% in AI paper presentation while for the countries mentioned above, it ranged between 20% and 30%, according to the Change Engine report titled ‘India’s State of AI Research: India’s Performance in Top Conferences as compared to the World’, reported The Economic Times.

The research examined the top 10 conferences on AI, machine language (ML), and data engineering with A+ and A ranking in the world, and the contribution of countries over the last one decade.
