Piyush Goyal Tweets of Meetings With US Trade Representative, Deal Details Still Undisclosed
New Delhi: Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal said he held a series of meetings with US Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer and his delegation to review the progress of the India-US trade discussions.
The details of India's trade deal with the US, announced through the India-US Joint Statement issued on February 6, remain undisclosed.
In a post on X, Goyal said the two sides discussed the current state of trade talks and looked at ways in which to deepen economic ties.
“Concluded a series of meetings with @USTradeRep Ambassador Jamieson Greer and his delegation this morning. We reviewed the progress of the ongoing India–U.S. trade discussions and explored avenues to further deepen our economic partnership,” Goyal wrote.
The minister posted a hat-tip to Greer.
"I appreciate Ambassador Greer’s leadership and the sustained efforts of both teams in advancing our discussions in a constructive and forward-looking manner," he said.
Greer said in a video message on Wednesday that technology cooperation forms among the “exciting opportunities” that the two sides can cooperate on.
“We know that India has a long history of agriculture, of manufacturing, but we also know that they're moving forward in technology. They want to move forward in AI. They want to cooperate and collaborate with the United States on the technologies of the future and trade of the future,” he said. This partnership is an instance of “some of the exciting opportunities” that the two countries can “capitalise on”, Washington's top trade negotiator added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Greer noted, “and they agreed to take the relationship to the next level. This includes the trade deal that we're working on, but it includes every aspect of the relationship”.
The US had imposed tariffs of 50%, some of its highest, on India, of which 25% was punitive and over the fact that India purchased Russian oil.
India has pledged to invest $500 billion in the US over the next few years. This, and other concessions led Washington to agree to lower its proposed tariff on Indian exports from 25% to around 18%. It is unclear how the talks are progressing since the US Supreme Court ruled on February 20 that the legal basis for the Trump administration’s reciprocal tariffs was invalid.
