New Delhi: India is 148th out of 199 countries, according to the Nomad Capitalist Passport Index 2025 released earlier this month.

The index is released to compare the world's most and least powerful passports by a tax consultancy, Nomad Capitalist.

India's immediate neighbour Pakistan is at 195th. Nepal and Bangladesh are at 180th and 181st respectively. Sri Lanka is at 168th. Within the subcontinent, India is outmatched by Bhutan which is at 140th.

The index evaluates 199 citizenships. Each passport is ranked across five key factors: visa-free travel, taxation, global perception, dual citizenship and personal freedom.

The index also aims to track how each passport evolves year by year, assigning scores in each category and highlighting which countries are rising – or falling – in global influence.

India ranks at 148, alongside the East African country of Comoros which has a population of 8.5 lakhs.

Ireland takes the top spot in 2025, edging out Switzerland. While both countries offer world-class global mobility, the index notes how Ireland pulls ahead thanks to a slight edge in visa-free, visa-on-arrival and ETA-based travel, combined with fast-track citizenship options.

Asia makes its first appearance in the 10th place, with the UAE which shares the rank with Iceland and New Zealand.

Last year, the Henley Passport Index, released by Henley & Partners, had kept India at the 82nd spot.
