Zohran Mamdani Is Elected New York City Mayor
New Delhi: Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election, projections by the Associated Press show.
A democratic socialist, Mamdani will be the first Muslim mayor to govern the city
Few campaigns for a city mayor have been more closely watched than Mamdani's.
“We have toppled a political dynasty," Mamdani said in a rousing speech after his win.
The son of Indian-origin filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, the 34-year-old is a member of the Democratic party and the Democratic Socialists of America. Mamdani also referred to the words of Jawaharlal Nehru in his winning speech, saying, "A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new..."

He has been a member of the New York state assembly from the 36th district, representing the Queens neighbourhood of Astoria, since 2021.
Mamdani has notably defeated independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who lost to him in the Democratic primaries and behind whom several influential people had thrown their weight. Just before the elections, US president Donald Trump had endorsed Cuomo, who resigned four years ago after several sexual harassment allegations.
“So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!,” Mamdani said in his speech.
“I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandoned the many, and answers only to the few,” Mamdani told supporters to applause.
