The Bharatiya Janata Party has defied 10 years of anti-incumbency and exit poll predictions to form the third consecutive government in Haryana as the Congress reels from losing another election in the Hindi heartland that was seen as a straight contest between the two national parties.

In Jammu and Kashmir, elections were held for the first time in a decade, and after the reading down of Article 370 and have seen the NC-Congress alliance winning the majority. But questions about the promise of statehood and the extent of powers that the new government will have remain to be answered.
