After a four-day vacuum caused by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s hasty resignation and departure from the country, Bangladesh has an interim government in place. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is leading the new interim government, has called for an end to violence against minorities. Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also asked to ensure protection of Bangladeshi Hindus as Sheikh Hasina continues to reside in India.
The Union government introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha but subsequently sent it to a joint parliamentary committee amid protests from opposition members.
The opposition has continued to question whether a conspiracy led to wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics, while the Union government has not yielded to a discussion in parliament.
