A 29-year-old Kuki woman who survived a vicious attack on May 4 by a Meitei mob in Imphal – that killed her husband and mother-in-law – describes what happened when she was beaten by men swinging wooden rods and left for dead on the road. Nancy Chingthiannang’s husband and mother in law were murdered. Even a one year old child of a relative was hit and beaten.
Nancy needed brain surgery to remove the clots on her brain. She spent 9 days in ICU in an Imphal hospital and nearly two weeks more in the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi.
In this 35 minute interview, Nancy is accompanied by her sister-in-law Jamngaihkim Gangte, who was there when the mob attacked their family and witnessed her brother and mother being killed.
This is a first person account of a harrowing experience. Nancy had been married for only five months when she was brutally widowed. Kim is a 20 year old college student who’s seen her mother and brother killed.
I deliberately won’t tell their story. These brave young women had the strength and composure to tell it themselves. They deserve to be heard directly. It’s the least we owe them.
