As elections campaigns in Uttar Pradesh grow more intense, opposition parties are forging alliances while the ruling BJP is distributing rations and unveiling a slew of projects to get its electoral message across.

Party heavyweights from the Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to the Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi are campaigning on the ground. But this ground is restricted to the state’s highways; no leader wants to venture deep into its alleys and by-lanes and thus, neither does the media.

The Wire‘s team travelled to the far-away village of Baraina in UP’s Bulandshahr district to cover the hinterland . There, a Dalit woman questions her local MLA, the BJP’s Anita Rajput, on her work.
