On May 3, large-scale violence erupted between the tribal and non-tribal communities after a march was organised in different hill districts by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur. It was in opposition to granting ST status to the Meiteis.

Churachandpur (Manipur): The Evangelical Church in M Songgel, Churachandpur is now the only place of residence for hundreds of people belonging to the Kuki community.

They claim that their houses were burnt down by the Metei community, following a large-scale violence that erupted between the tribal and non-tribal communities after a march was organised on May 3 in different hill districts by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur.

The march was in opposition to granting Scheduled Tribe status to the state’s majority community, the Meiteis.

The Wire’s Yaqut Ali reports from Churachandpur to bring to you what’s happening on the ground.
