New Delhi: Latest findings of the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6) have resulted in the opposition Congress slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Gujarat over key indicators of the survey exposing significant gaps in women's education, economic independence and digital access.

One of the main findings of the provisional NFHS-6 data is that only 76.3% of females aged six years and above in Gujarat have ever attended school. It indicates that nearly one in every four women has never entered a classroom, reported New Indian Express.

Moreover, only 38.6% women in Gujarat have completed ten or more years of schooling. Here too, the urban-rural divide is stark. While 51.9% of urban women have studied for ten years or more, this figure is only 28.8% in rural areas, indicates the survey.

In the gender gap in education becomes more evident by the fact that 47% of men have completed ten or more years of schooling.

The survey also reveals that only 16% of households have female members who own a house or land, either independently or jointly with others.

"Only 16% of women own a house or land in Gujarat. This statistic raises serious questions about the government's claims of economic and social empowerment of women," Gujarat Congress spokesperson Hiren Banker told New Indian Express.

The survey also highlights the sharp digital divide in urban and rural areas. While Internet usage among urban women stands at 81.3%, only 54.3 per cent of rural women have access to the internet.

Moreover, only 58.8% of women in Gujarat own and use a mobile phone.

"The shocking NFHS-6 figures have exposed the Gujarat model. The BJP government repeatedly projects a narrative of development, but the latest National Family Health Survey data reveals serious shortcomings in the condition of women across the State. When nearly a quarter of women have never attended school, can this truly be called women’s empowerment?" said Banker, the Gujarat Congress spokesperson.
