Day 118 of US-Israel War on Iran: White House Asks for $80 Billion From Congress to Cover Cost of War
New Delhi: After the US Senate passed a war powers resolution to stop military action against Iran on Tuesday (June 23), the White House has formally requested the Congress for a sum of $87.6 billion to replenish the Pentagon and cover the costs of the US war against Iran.
Associated Press reported that the request was submitted by the Office of Management and Budget mere hours after President Donald Trump got into a heated argument with Republican representatives on Wednesday (June 24) over their votes to approve the resolution seeking an end to hostilities.
Although the request mostly covers expenses incurred during Operation Epic Fury, it also demands $11.1 billion to assist American farmers, $1.4 billion for the Ebola virus outbreak and $500 million “to complete restoration and construction projects in and around Washington, DC.”
US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has slammed Trump's demand for funds in a social media post on X, saying, "After dragging America into a reckless war, he now wants Congress to hand him tens of billions more to paper over the damage – while families are still paying higher prices. We should be lowering costs for the American people, not writing another blank check for Trump."
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is on the third day of his Gulf tour to discuss the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. “We’re not going to do anything that undermines the security of our … longstanding allies in the region,” Rubio told reporters in Kuwait, according to Al Jazeera.
In Lebanon, Israeli strikes have killed at least two people despite demands from both US and Iran for a ceasefire.
