New Delhi: As the United States expanded its airstrike campaign against Iran on Friday (July 17) by hitting more bridges, electrical equipment and collapsing a tower at a key Iranian port, retaliatory attacks from Iran have targeted key infrastructure in neighbouring US-allied nations, including Qatar, a key mediator in the war, along with Kuwait and Bahrain. The US-Israel war on Iran has entered the 140th day.

The US-led strikes, that have continued for six nights now, are part of President Donald Trump’s threats to pressure Tehran to ease its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

In a latest strike by the US, a woman was killed in southern Iran’s Bandar Abbas, while her one-year-old child was left critically injured from shrapnel wounds. Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the US strike in the Tappeh Allah Akbar neighbourhood of Bandar Abbas also left eight others injured.

Meanwhile, this morning, Kuwait said that Iran had attacked a power and water desalination plant, causing widespread damage to the station. In Kuwait, about 90% of drinking water comes from desalination – and any disruption can threaten life in the small, desert nation.

On the other hand, Israel’s parliament dissolved early Friday after passing a marathon of bills in the last moments of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition. The Knesset, which was scheduled to break for its summer recess on Friday, will not reconvene before the elections scheduled on October 27.

The dissolution was expected as pressure grows on Netanyahu, who is struggling to hold onto power ahead of the next elections. Israeli polls have shown a groundswell of support for opposition parties, led by former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and a popular centrist former military chief.
