New Delhi: An Israeli airstrike has killed the prime minister of the Houthi rebel-led government in Sana'a, the capital city of Yemen, reports quoting the Houthis have said, noting that the latter has vowed vengeance.
Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed in a strike conducted by the Benjamin Netanyahu-led Israel in Sana’a on August 28, the Houthis said a day ago. The attack took place during a routine meeting, they said. The statement said that ministers and officials of the rebel-led government also sustained " moderate to serious wounds".
The deputy prime minister Mohammed Ahmed Miftah has been appointed interim prime minister.
“We shall take vengeance, and we shall forge from the depths of wounds a victory,” Mahdi al-Mashat, a Yemeni politician and military officer who serves as the chairman of the Supreme Political Council of the Houthis, said in a video message later in the day, according to Al Jazeera.
The Israeli military said that it has "precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target in the area of Sanaa in Yemen."
Al-Rahawi had been prime minister to the Houthi-led government since August 2024.
The Guardian has reported that the Israeli strike took place as the rebel-owned television station was broadcasting a speech by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the secretive leader of the rebel group, in which he was sharing updates on latest developments in Gaza and vowing retaliation against Israel.
On August 22, the Houthis had launched a ballistic missile toward Israel, allegedly the first cluster bomb the rebels had launched at it since 2023.
Israel has targeted Houthi positions in recent months amidst hostility over Israel's attacks on Palestinians in Gaza.
