New Delhi: On Sunday, May 26, the Israeli Army reported that 8 missiles had been fired by Hamas (from Rafah Southern Gaza) towards Tel Aviv. In the last several months, several million people have been displaced in Gaza, more than 35,000 people killed, and around 75,000 remain severely injured.
The Rafah region was one of the last remaining safe zones in the Gaza Strip. However, the Israeli Army had been carrying out intensive ground military assault despite the strict order by the ICJ to discontinue all forms of military assault in the Rafah region.
Following the Hamas strike at Tel Aviv, Israel intensified its military assault on Sunday, launching at least 8 missiles at the refugee camps in the Rafah region. According to Al Jazeera, the attack took place at around 8:45 pm, killing 40 people.
An Al Jazeera report quoted the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) statement that said that due to the Israeli attack, many people in the Tal as-Sultan area were “burned alive” inside their tents.
One witness recalled how “the tents are melting and the people’s bodies are also melting”, reported Reuters news agency.
According to the Israeli military, the attack was planned to strike a Hamas compound in Rafah with “precise ammunition and on the basis of precise intelligence” and killed the chief of staff and another official of Hamas.
However, according to a Reuters report, the Israeli military acknowledged that the attack was “under review” since they were aware that “several civilians in the area were harmed“. Benny Gantz, the Israeli war cabinet minister also stated that the attack proved that the Israeli military, “must operate in every place Hamas still operates from”.
Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency also revealed that the attacks were targeted at the Brix camp, where there were hundreds of temporary makeshift tents near the UNRWA warehouse.
Following the attack, a massive fire broke out, that took almost 45 minutes to extinguish. There was also an overwhelming increase in the influx of patients at the Red Cross’s field hospital and other remaining hospitals, reported Al Jazeera.
The Doctors Without Borders group stated on X, “We are horrified by this deadly event, which shows once again that nowhere is safe.”
