Karachi: At Least 6 Killed in Protests Over Supreme Leader Khamenei’s Death
New Delhi: At least six people were killed and about a dozen injured on Sunday during clashes between protesters and security forces in Karachi after protestors moved toward the United States Consulate, news agency AP reported.
The unrest began hours after the US and Israel carried out strikes on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei among other top Iranian officials.
Hundreds of protesters gathered near the consulate in Karachi, the report said. According to the police, demonstrators breached the outer boundary of the diplomatic mission before being pushed back.
Summaiya Syed Tariq, a police surgeon at Karachi’s main government hospital, told AP that six bodies and several injured individuals were brought to the facility. Police and hospital officials reported that at least eight others were wounded in the violence.
Senior police official Irfan Baloch confirmed that a nearby police post was burned and windows at the consulate were damaged before forces brought the situation under control.
