New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have joined the world leaders in condemning the assassination attempt at former US president Donald Trump.
Modi took to X (formerly, Twitter) to note that he is “deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump”.
“Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. Strongly condemn the incident. Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, those injured and the American people,” said Modi.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said “such acts must be condemned in the strongest possible terms”. “I am deeply concerned by the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. Such acts must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Wishing him a swift and complete recovery,” he wrote on X.
US President Joe Biden also condemned the incident. “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it,” he said.
Former US president Barack Obama that he was “relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt”. “There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics,” said President Obama.
Newly elected UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally”.
Taking to X, he wrote, “I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes. Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.”
Canadian President Justin Trudeau said he was “sickened” by the shooting at Trump. “I’m sickened by the shooting at former President Trump. It cannot be overstated — political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts are with former President Trump, those at the event, and all Americans,” he wrote on X.
The former US president was shot at during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13. The US secret service, in a statement on X, said that the shooter had been “neutralised”. The bullet is said to have pierced the upper part of Trump’s right ear and the Republican presidential candidate was “doing well” after the shooting, his team said.
