New Delhi: Polish conservative leader Karol Nawrocki, who is described as a 'Eurosceptic' has won the run-off election for the country's presidency.

Nawrocki's opponent, the centrist leader Rafal Trzaskowski – from the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) party – got 49.11% of the votes. Trzaskowski is the mayor of the Polish capital of Warsaw. He was s narrowly ahead in the first round of the presidential elections.

Nawrocki – who is backed by the right-wing opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) – won 50.89% of the votes.

Nawrocki had established the lead in Sunday's exit polls. While Poland's president has a ceremonial role, similar to India's, he is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

However, the results are significant as the Associated Press notes that they could set the course for the nation’s political future and its relations with the European Union.

The outcome of the presidential election will also see whether the Donald Tusk government can take forward its plans, which have been stymied by PiS president Andrzej Duda since the government was elected about 18 months ago.
