New Delhi: A 19-foot-tall statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, labelled ‘Statue of Equality,’ will be unveiled in the US on October 14. The figure is part of the Ambedkar International Center (AIC) in Accokeek, Maryland, and will be the tallest statue of Ambedkar outside India.
The statue was crafted by Ram Sutar, a renowned artist who also created Sardar Patel’s ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat. The ‘Statue of Equality’ in Maryland is a replica of the world’s largest Ambedkar statue, located in Hyderabad and which stands 125 feet tall.
AIC states the Statue of Equality is a symbol of Ambedkar’s enduring influence and will honour his contributions to equality, human rights and empowerment. It will be part of the larger Ambedkar Memorial being constructed at the centre.
AIC said it expects a large number of followers of the Ambedkarite movement, as well as representatives from various countries to attend the unveiling ceremony on October 14, the day on which, in 1956, Ambedkar and lakhs of his followers converted to Buddhism.
