The most incredible if not unbelievable spat has broken out between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump has called him a dictator, who has done a terrible job, and a “modestly successful comedian”, accusing him of starting the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump claims Zelenskyy isn’t important enough to be involved in peace talks. Trump adds Zelensky “better move fast or he is not going to have a country left”.
In response, Zelenskyy has accused Trump of living in a “disinformation bubble” and disputed his $500 billion bill for aid to Ukraine.
Financial Times columnist Martin Wolf believes that Trump likes dictators and wants to be one himself and particularly admires Putin. Wolf also said that Trump is clearly on Russia’s side and does not see Ukraine as an ally.
In contrast, Krishnan Srinivasan, India’s former foreign secretary and former Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth, believes the spat should not be taken seriously because it’s laughable and like two school boys quarrelling in a yard.
