Watch | ‘I Kept Telling Them I Was 16’: Minor Speaks Out After Release From Jail

A 16-year-old minor was kept in jail with adult prisoners for nearly two months in connection with the Noida workers’ protest case. Following The Wire’s report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognisance of the matter and sought responses from the Uttar Pradesh Police and prison authorities.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police later claimed that the minor told officers he was 19 years old at the time of his arrest. However, the minor, his family and lawyer dispute this claim. Even after repeatedly telling the police that he was 16 years old, they kept recording his age as 18 or 19, they allege.

After his release, the minor spoke to The Wire’s Shruti Sharma for the first time about his arrest, his time in jail and the police’s version of events.
