India's capacity to emerge as an independent pole in international affairs will depend on which route it takes to greatness. But it goes without saying that a divided society will face handicaps in dealing with challenges.

When a neighbour’s house is burning, inaction is not an option or solution. China is likely to capitalise on the anarchy, so India can hardly sit back and watch.

Myanmar is still in the midst of a protracted low-intensity conflict that could stretch on for years without any side being able to assert nation-wide control, possibly leaving in its wake a highly fractured, fragmented and balkanised polity.

It is clear now that India needs to enlarge and expand its options in Myanmar towards a more comprehensive relationship rooted in support of the people, not the Tatmadaw alone.
