Former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, says India has to grit its teeth and bear the situation if US tariffs against Indian goods indeed rise to 50%. He says that retaliation could hurt us more. India has to rely on diplomacy behind closed doors to change President Trump’s thinking, he adds.

Ahluwalia also suggests that India must rethink its position on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and seek to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). In fact, India must seek to join CPTPP before China does to ensure that China doesn’t have any influence or veto on India’s terms of entry, he warns.
