The Union finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has presented the Budget for the financial year 2024-25 today. While the Economic Survey of the previous financial year – presented a day ago – raised more questions than answers, the Budget appears to have heeded middle class anger.

This is also the first Budget being presented by a Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party which does not have the majority in the Lok Sabha – a fact which places its attention to key states ruled by coalition partners under closer scrutiny.
