New Delhi: The Delhi government on Monday (July 8) directed that an earlier transfer order issued for 5,000 school teachers who have been posted in one school for more than 10 years, be kept on abeyance.

The order, which was facing opposition from teachers’ associations and also the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) kept at abeyance after Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena gave instructions in this regard to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, reported the Press Trust of India.

Saxena on Sunday asked Kumar to keep the transfer orders in abeyance after a delegation of Delhi BJP leaders and representatives of teachers met the L-G in his office.

AAP leader and Delhi Education Minister Atishi termed the development as a victory for the teachers and people of Delhi, and alleged that the earlier decision to transfer the teachers was a ‘conspiracy’ hatched by the BJP.

“Our dispensation in Delhi has transformed government schools in the last 10 years. The results of students here have set records. The BJP could not digest this change and hence a conspiracy was hatched to transfer teachers to ruin this education revolution. “I am happy that today the BJP had to withdraw this order through its L-G, said Atishi at a press conference, reported PTI.

The BJP hit back, with the party’s Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva saying that the BJP doesn’t do politics on the functioning of the education system and accused the AAP of ‘damaging’ the education system.

Last week, education minister Atishi had issued a show-cause notice to the education secretary and the education department after it issued abrupt transfer orders to nearly 5,000 government school teachers, despite Atishi’s directive to halt the transfers.

The government school teachers association had urged the department to revoke the guideline stipulating transfer of teachers after a particular time period.
