New Delhi: Images and videos of waterlogged streets in Karnataka’s capital of Bengaluru have swept social media after overnight rains in the city led to knee-deep water in several areas for the second time this week.
Residents from various parts of the city tweeted of struggles in commuting. Reports said the authorities have warned residents to avoid going out of houses except in emergencies and asked guardians not to send their wards to school in light of the civic challenges.
The city’s civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, has set up hotline numbers so that residents can reach out in case of emergencies. A toll-free number, 1533, has also been opened, reports said.
A user tweeted a video showing water standing outside the Bengaluru airport as well.
The standing water caused massive snarls at various places in the city which is already known for traffic jams.
Twitter users posted images of vehicles stranded and broken down in the rain as well.
On September 1, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mohapatra had said that the rainfall average for the country as a whole was likely to be above normal, approximately 109% of the long period average of 167.9 mm for the month of September.
“Normal to above normal rainfall probability is likely over most parts of India except many parts of northeast India, and some parts of east and northwest India where below normal rainfall is likely,” he had said.
