Rain Havoc in the Northeast: 50 Plus Deaths, More Than a Million Affected by Floods, Landslides

New Delhi: Massive rain, coupled along with devastation resulting from floods continued to impact eastern India, especially the northeast.

Rain and flood related deaths were reported from states such as Assam and Nagaland, where most of the districts have been affected by deluge.

Eight more deaths were reported on Wednesday in Assam, while more than 16.25 lakh people being affected by the deluge across 27 districts of the state.

So far, 56 people have lost their lives in this year’s flood, landslide and storm, reported the Press Trust of India.

According to the daily flood report released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two persons died at Tezpur revenue circle of Sonitpur district, one person each drowned at Mayong of Morigaon, Naharkatia of Dibrugarh, Pub Mangaladi of Darrang, Dergaon of Golaghat, Halem of Biswanath and Margherita of Tinsukia.

The government report added that more than 16,25,000 people are affected because of the floods in Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, East Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur and Tinsukia districts, reported PTI.

Dhubri is the worst-hit district in Assam where 2.23 lakh people are suffering.

In Nagaland, rain related-related incidents resulted in at least five deaths and caused widespread damage in the last few days, reported PTI.

Two boys from Kejok village in Tuensang district were swept away during the floods at Ayong nullah on June 28, said a government statement.

It added that several landslides and road blockages were reported in Fakim-Tsundang area in Pungro sub-division in the district. Owing to a mudslide, Penkim and Fakim areas have been cut off from Tsundang, Sangtsong, Vongtsuvong areas, reported PTI.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) is has appealed to the public to avoid fishing or picnicking during the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, in Arunachal Pradesh, the state’s first and only highway connecting Itanagar to Jote remained closed due to landslide at several places, reported The Arunachal Times.

In another report, The Arunachal Times said that the border district of Anjaw has been cut off from the rest of the country due to continuous rain.

The power supply has also been disrupted after electric poles washed away during. Mobile network has also been affected due to the landslide.
