The Telangana government’s decision to auction 400 acres of land inside the University of Hyderabad, with a base price of Rs 10,000 crore, has triggered protests. Bulldozers began demolishing rock formations and lakes 20 days ago. Students teachers, and activists have formed a Joint Action Committee to oppose the sale, demanding the land be officially registered under the university. A public interest litigation has been filed, with the next high court hearing scheduled for April 7. Meanwhile, 53 students were detained, with two PhD scholars still in judicial custody. Protesters argue this is a pre-planned assault on education, ecology and Telangana’s heritage.
