New Delhi: On Monday, July 12, a Syro-Malabar Church was demolished by civic authorities on the grounds that it was constructed on encroached gram sabha land.

Officials of the Little Flower Church say that demolition was illegal and that the manner in which it took place left them with no time to respond through legal measures.

Making an official statement on the matter, South Delhi District Magistrate Ankita Chakravati said that the demolition drive was carried out after receiving a letter from the Home Police-II Department, in which a high court order from 2015 on demolishing encroachments was cited.

Ravi Sagar, an advocate of the Supreme Court says that the demolition looks like it was "totally illegal."

The Wire spoke to officials of the Church on how the events unfolded. The Wire also reached out to District Magistrate Ankita Chakravati for further comments but did not receive any response.
