“The RBI recently published a detailed report on employment. As per the report, around eight crore new jobs were created in the last three-four years. This figure has silenced those those spreading fake narratives on jobs,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Mumbai recently.

In conversation with The Wire‘s founding editor M.K. Venu, labour economist Santosh Mehrotra says the RBI-sponsored research showing a big surge in employment in recent years, including during COVID-19 years, has no credibility. It is just another narrative to hide the real mess in the economy where the problem of joblessness remains acute as reflected in the recent elections.
