New Delhi: Observing that the Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a charge sheet without arrest, a Delhi court today, March 15, granted bail to Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, their daughter Misa Bharti and 13 others in the case in which the central agency has alleged that the family was involved in a land-for-job scam.
In Patna, MLAs of the RJD and those from the opposing Bharatiya Janata Party saw a scuffle over the distribution of sweets celebrating the bail order.
Each accused will have to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety of the same amount, Special Judge Geetanjali Goel has ruled.
Yadav is a former Union minister. Both he and Rabri Devi are former Bihar chief ministers. All 16 accused had been summoned to the court today.
LiveLaw has reported that the court while summoning them, prima facie observed that the material on record shows commission of offences under various sections of the India Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
CBI’s chargesheet had been filed in October 2022. In it, it had alleged that residents of Bihar were appointed in Group-D posts in the Railways in exchange for their land when Lalu was Railway minister between 2004 and 2009.
After raids at Lalu’s son Tejashwi Yadav’s properties in connection to the same case, the Enforcement Directorate said it had detected “proceeds of crime amounting to about Rs 600 crore at this point of time which is in the form of immovable properties of Rs 350 crore and transactions of Rs 250 crore routed through various benamidaars.”
Tejashwi, who is Bihar deputy chief minister, had asked the Bharatiya Janata Party to make public the list of items seized from his houses.
The raids have been criticised by opposition parties as yet another act of overreach by the ruling party against an opposition force.
